Haier Appliance Owner History

Haier’s history began in 1984 in Qingdao, China, when a small, failing refrigerator factory named Qingdao Refrigerator Company was on the verge of closure. Zhang Ruimin, a young manager was tasked with turning things around. Inspired by a visit to a Japanese factory, Zhang implemented radical changes, emphasizing quality control, customer feedback, and employee empowerment. This laid the foundation for Haier’s future success.

During that time, refrigerators were manufactured under the name of Qindao-Liebherr. The brand name “Haier” came from the last two syllables of the Chinese transliteration of Liebherr.

In 1988, the municipal government asked Haier to take over some of the city’s other ailing appliance manufacturers. The company assumed control of Qingdao Electroplating Company. Then, in 1991, its name was changed to “Qingdao Haier Group”. The company’s name was simplified to its current name “Haier” in 1992.

By the 1990s, Haier had become the top appliance brand in China. But Zhang wouldn’t settle for domestic dominance. He embarked on a global expansion, acquiring iconic brands like GE Appliances (2016) and Fisher & Paykel (2012).

Today, Haier Group Corporation reigns as the number one major appliance brand worldwide.
